I was pondering Garth Turner's defection to the Liberals and have come to the conclusion that it can only mean one of three things:
a) Stephane Dion and the Liberals are moving to the right.
b) Garth Turner is moving to the Left.
c) When you boil it down, politics is really about one thing: staying in office long enough to qualify for a gold-plated pension.

Gerry, That is a silly and gratuitous comment. Garth is independently wealthy and already qualifies for the MP pension under the previous rules that were in effect when he was elected in the 1980s. Please let us know how much the NCC is paying you.
Pay your money to join the NCC and then read the Annual Report. I know, I know, it goes against the grain to actually spend your own money instead of taxpayers.
Anonymous, I think you are right about the pension. But my point about political greed stands.
I think his defection has more to do with fact the Progressive Conservatives don't exist anymore so being caught between a rock and a hard place, he really wasn't a good fit in either party. The difference is Stephane Dion has a somewhat greater tolerance of dissent than Harper.
In addition Harper and Turner hated each other so it was only a matter of time before he was turfed from the party.
Since he couldn't win as an independent or Green Party and the Conservatives wouldn't allow him back in the party, the only way he could have a shot at holding his seat is to jump to the Liberals.
I think the riding will be close, although I think Garth Turner will narrowly pull it off. I believe you live in Oakville Gerry, so you might have a better idea whether the Halton region is like elsewhere turning against the Conservative agenda or is this a region that is going against the grain and is pleasantly surprised.
