Ottawa Gossip

I'm in Ottawa right now where the weather is c-c-c-cold.

But the gossip is hot.

There seems to be a sense from the people I am talking to that a federal election might be near, even though it doesn't seem to be in the interest of any political party.

Me I still think an election might be a year away.

I think that Canadians would rally against another election this year. Most especially Ontarians. How would they rally against such a thing? Vote against whoever forced it.

If Harper cares about ticking off voters then he should have an election this spring. If, on the other hand he wants to sit tight, wait and see how things pan out in Quebec and Ontario, then I'm thinking that's better strategy.

Although it would give the Liberals time to elect another leader. Oh, wait, they already did that?

If Harper really wanted to piss-off people he'll force an election. I don't think he's that stupid. I didn't vote Harper last election but sure as shootin' I'll be doing so next time....whenever it is.

I get the impression that the Liberals are imploding, and quickly.

Hopefully there won’t be an election anytime soon since legitimate fiscal/social small-c conservatives do not have a party to vote for. Where’re back to the pre-Manning days with another Red Tory government.

Harper’s double tax increases, enormous spending increases, new regulations, significant increases in the size of government and his very, very liberal, pitiable record on social issues have mandated that all morally conscientious small-c conservatives, who have any integrity, sit out the next election as a protest to those disingenuous liberals who have taken Mr. Manning’s conservative party away from him and us.

"All morally conscientious small-c conservatives, who have any integrity, should sit out the next election."

Anonymous, I think you need to heed the words of that most principled and intellectual godfather of conservative thought - Edmund Burke who said:

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

Do you want a liberal Canada? A socialist Canada(Liberal)? Or a Communist Canada (NDP)?

I'll take my chances with Harper.

I think an election will be in May. Harper has a better chance at winning when Dion is new and he can easily be defined negatively than when he becomes more of a known quantity. If it is right after a budget sprinkled with tax cuts and a big fat cheque to solve the fiscal imbalance in Quebec, this should help Harper, whereas if after a summer of several deaths in Afghanistan and a very hot one bringing the environment to the forefront, then it is bad news for Harper.
