Liberal Stand on Terrorism Bad Politics

Not quite sure why Liberal leader Stephane Dion is opposing extending certain provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Yes it will appeal to the Left-wing faction of his base, but it might also alienate the all-important swing voters, most of whom don't much like the idea of getting blown up.

It's like Dion is saying, "I will protect you from the Alberta oil sands, but you're on your own when it comes to Osama Bin Laden."

And it seems like some Liberals agree with me.

I actually think this is good politics. When it comes to national security, Canadians tend to be generally left wing, largely in reaction to the United States since we like to be different on foreign policy. Most of the Liberals threatening to break ranks are doing it because they believe the party is making the wrong decision, not because they think the party's stance is unpopular.

I don't think I could've summed up the spinelessness of the average liberal any better.

Interviewer: Do you support Canada being attacked by terrorists?
Dion: Well, if we are more socially generous and give them social welfare benefits, and instead put murderers, paedophiles and terrorists on the streets instead of in jail where they belong - we will not suffer a terrorist attack and we will not need any laws...

50% of Canadians are left-of-centre. There are 4 left wing parties.

I think the other 50% of average Canadians are a little less stupid than Bore-rat Dion.

Oh that's right, we're just playing to our radical base...

Not like that Hezbollah mole - Denis Coderre.

Ace - I was simply pointing out on security matters, Canadians tend to lean left and it has nothing to do with coddling the terrorists. Many Canadians believe terrorism is largely a response by an aggressive American foreign policy and that by joining in we are only breeding more while keeping our distance will make us less a target. This is not a simplistic argument as you think and most Canadians understand this, which is why the Conservative position isn't winning amongst voters.

Miles - prove that "when it comes to national security, Canadians tend to be generally left wing.....". Name your source.

You had better think again Mr. Lunn.
The last polls speak volumes to counter just about everything you've posted here.

Anonymous - It is not so much polls, but more Canadian attitudes. Canadians generally tend to dislike any type of law or attitude that is seen as "too American" and being tough on terrorism is seen as "too American" for most Canadians. Polls have also shown Canadians are generally pacifist in their leanings. This is especially true in Quebec and the GTA, which together make up 40% of Canada's population.
