Keep the lights on

On Saturday we are supposed to turn our lights off for an hour -- It's called Earth Hour.

Last year I put in my two cents about this dopey idea.

So this year, I have decided to offer a couple of other opinions.

First, check out Joseph Ben Ami's piece; he explains why Earth Hour is not such a bright idea.

Next read this op ed from the Ayn Rand Center, which argues the "call for people to renounce energy and to rejoice at darkened skyscrapers makes its real meaning unmistakably clear: Earth Hour symbolizes the renunciation of industrial civilization".

Even though I will be out that evening, using energy, I will be leaving my lights on. Consider it a 'symbolic' gesture to show my spite at this stupid idea. Sure it might cost me a buck on my heating bill, but the satisfaction will be worth it. I might leave a TV or two on as well.

I think your attitude is dopey and immature. You don't want to you don't have to.

Get over it.

Dopey and immature is a better description of all those fools who mindlessly wallow in the dark.

This silly stunt amounts to nothing more than a colossal waste of time.

Just caught the advance hype on the Weather Channel...encouraging everyone to turn anything and everything off that is powered by electricity, but wanting us to note that they will be airing a special broadcast of the "Earth Hour" event.

...which we can all watch with our electricity-powered and light-emitting TV's turned off, presumably?

ROTFL.

I think symbolic gestures are silly. I am frugal with my use of electricity because I hate waste and don't wish to pay for it. I plan to pass the evening as per usual--using the lights when I need them and turning them off when I'm finished. Pattipage
