Sad News

The untimely demise of the Western Standard is sad news for Canada's conservative movement.

Now more than ever, the country needs a strong, principled conservative voice.

I hope someone soon emerges to help fill the void.

In the meantime, Terry O'Neill is posting his articles which would would have been in the magazine on the the Standard's Blog. Here's one on the judiciary which quotes me.

  1. ... It makes sense... the whole "eastern/western" thing has become a counter-productive tribal division.

if I read Ezra's letter correctly, only the printed version is being discontinued.
The online edition will (hopefully) continue.
I agree with Iain that the "Western" should be dropped to avoid regional labeling.
How about "Canadian Standard" or even just "The Standard".

  4. Not exactly sad myself. I believe in a healthy democracy you need both left, centre, and right wing publications, but at least have thoughtful and intelligent ones, not a bunch of trash and rants. I don't often agree with Mark Steyn, but at least his articles are well written. People like Ezra Levant are nothing but a bunch of trash and they don't even make convincing arguments to advance their causes. If anything the Western Standard probably turned people away from conservatism since they seemed to just re-enforce all the negative stereotypes people have of conservatism.

You don't agree with Mark Steyn?

You mean Bin Laden is not dead and the Iraq War wasn't over within two weeks????

    I've been Steyn-walled!!

Seriously, Miles lunn. You have finally said something that I agree with.

The angry venom of accusations/spin coming from the Western Standard does much damage to the cause of conservatism in Canada.

As does the Civitas boys writing stuff like "Atlantic Premiers addicted to cash" on complex issues such as the Atlantic Accord.

  7. Anonymous - Western Standard was essentially Canada's version of Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, and other right wing radio talk shows. The problem for conservatives is that type of garbage may sell well south of the border, but it doesn't here and simply ensures many people who might have conservative leanings stay away from it.
