Gerry, the people at the top want this. As the economic might of the first world diminishes due to planned destruction, all that is left is to spend what remains of our credit. Soon that will be gone too and yuppies and boomers of course will not want to experience any pain either. (real conservative)
Good article.
However, I suspect there is even more to this than meets the eye.
Fiscal conservatives may have been thrown under the bus, as you say, but they are simply the collateral damage in the global war on individualism.
