What Fixed Election Date?

I have a column in the Sun media today examining why Prime Minister Harper can ignore his own fixed election date legislation and call a snap vote.

Basically it's because he can.

Perhaps you want to write your next column on how opposition parties in this country can threaten and threaten and threaten to call an election and then hide behind the curtains when push comes to shove.

Or maybe how the opposition parties can met with the Prime Minister and refused to let him govern until 2009.

Or maybe how you have never gotten over your bitterness towards Steven Harper.

Just some thoughts Gerry, IF you can put your bitterness towards Stephen Harper on hold for an hour or so.

  2. I guess some people just wont read the bill..Full text available to everyone Gerry.First paragraph below.
    Date of General Election
    Date des élections générales

    Powers of Governor General preserved

56.1 (1) Nothing in this section affects the powers of the Governor General, including the power to dissolve Parliament at the Governor General’s discretion.

There you have it Gerry, first paragraph of the act,so what your problem with the truth??

Obviously Gerry is right on board with the Libs and Dippers who use the media to call PMSH a liar.

Gerry misses the good old days when Martin and Cretin could lie their way thru years of corruption and waste, accomplishing nothing in Parliament for Canadaians, then call an election when the polls looked good.
Gerry obviously approves of the Libs sitting on their hands in Parliament.

Do you not think that threatening an election over and over and over for the last 2.5 years could be having a negative effect on our economy and investment in this country? Not to mention the constant possibility of party getting into power (liberals) that will impliment a massive tax on all businesses if elected. I believe this is why we are seeing more and more companies moving out of Canada and back to the US. (John Deere is the latest) Isn't it the duty of the PM to end this uncertainty once and for all and get this country back to a stable govt?

  5. I, too, am disappointed they didn't keep their fixed election commitment (even if it was damaging politically).

Although, when it comes to the ad, you have to give the PR guys some credit as there were six women who appeared near the end of the 30 seconder (a demographic that Harper is weak with). Plus, it looks like they may be going after the youth vote...mostly first time voters that maybe don't remember the Liberal heydays of the 90s.

aah yes the "good old days" when Cretin was "clever" and "savvy" to call an election whenever the polls looked good. Fact is our present parliament is dysfunctional, Dion has been beaking about Canadians being "having an appitite for election", he should have been more careful what he wished for. But hay Lieberanos are "clever" when they go to the polls early, clearly Conservatives aren't "allowed" P M Harper is showing good leadership in my opinion, Dion, doucett, Layton have refused to work with P M Harper, so go to the people, I will vote for the Conservative party, they have done an amazing job in a minority situation, and have accomplished more in the last two and a half years than the Lieberanos in the previous 12.

  7. ... Gerry, we've been "encouraging" Mr. Harper to the Right in the past. Now, is the time to be solidly behind him.
... Should be great! Looks like solid conservative decisions on both sides of the border this fall.

  8. Mr. Nicholls:

Does it not bother you in the least that Mr. Harper is basically refusing to abide by even the spirit of his own legislation?

    If it doesn't, it should.

For one thing, it will mean the Liberals won't have time to dream up a better campaign slogan, which right now is the accurate but slightly uninspired: "Stephane Dion, he's not as wimpy as you think.",

I think a nebbish like you should stay away from accusations of wimpiness, Gerry.
