Medal Mania

Thanks goodness Canada is starting to win some medals at the Olympic games.

Maybe this will put an end to the cries that we need to impose some sort of Stalinist-style "Sports Culture" on the public.

right you are Gerry. What we need instead is to give our selves permission to like to compete with the rest of the world and BEAT THEM in the forum of "excellence" in sport??

We need to move kids off the couch and into the competitive arena and just like measuring academic achievement by comparing, contrast and competing, we need to stop feeling guilty as a country for wanting to be excellent.

The philosophy of just being there doesn't cut it in education and it shouldn't cut it in the sports arena either.

  2. The problam starts in minor sports. They don't even keep score in some sports saying it should only be about fun, totally oblivious to the fact that the competition is the fun. This not only lowers the drive to win but also does not give these children the sportsman-like manners of losing gracefully.

  3. ... Winning medals, and "beating others" is the goals of the terribly insecure.
    ... The Olympics are meaningless.
... The true value of sports is fitness, fun, and fellowship.
... Truly confident people do not "compete", they do their best towards values which are a productive, constructive contribution to our world.
