Well now it's official.
The Conservative Party is conservative in name only.
Makes me yearn for the days when we had relatively fiscally conservative leaders, like Jean Chretien.

Is there a Tory left in Ottawa.
I'd take Paul Martin at this point.

We're all NDP supporters now.
This is not a Liberal budget, there is no money missing.
Oh for pity-party's sake, no party was about to do anything different with this budget!
The Coalition saw to it that this minority government could not do anything different.
You will still get to moan and complain about the PM for the next while. The media finds you useful to them.
We are where we are in this country, tied to whatever the other main trading partners do.
We may as well buckle up, suck it up, and get on with finding our way through it for our families.
It is what we always do, in spite of the gang, the whole pile of them, in Ottawa.
Ottawa needs Paul.

I never thought I would say that I wished for Paul Martin or Jean Chretien.
But I do. I am furious with this budget. Harper deserves to fall over this one.

We could have put in a conservative budget and gone down with our principles. Now the CPC doesn't even have those.
I would have been have to us voted out on a conservative budget. Any Coalition would have an expiration of 6 months, and election would have returned the same parliment again. If not returned us with at least a couple of more seats.
Ah yes, Harper sold out his base and conservative ideals because he was deathly afraid that the opposition would vote down a conservative budget, and trigger an election that none of them can afford to fight, despite the fact that Conservatives could fight 2 in short order if necessary, and would probably win a majority in the first election anyway.
Harper capitulated because the media has given the opposition permission to bastardize Parliamentary rules and install themselves as government without facing the electorate first.
Harper knew this and rather than gamble the country away to banana republic politics, did what he had to do to prevent it.
Wake up folks. Harper is going to come out on top. Maybe not right away but he, and we conservatives, will.
One thing in particular in this budget that impact me directly is this item “Protecting the severance pay for employees when companies go bankrupt.” I have worked for this unnamed company for over a decade now, a friend of mine for almost 2 decades . We have seen a lot of good people get laid off for a number of years now. They got their severance pay and all much needed support to get them back on their feet. All in all the company treated its employees very generously after being told they have been affected by company “right sizing” efforts. Recently the company declared Chapter 11 Bancruptcy protection and all employees have been told that there will be no merit increases for the next few years, what’s worse previous and future severance pay agreements are now in limbo and will be treated just like any other creditor that will need to get in line.
So for all of you squirming in protest, groaning with angst about how this budget is not Conservative at all, think about us ordinary hard working immigrant conservative canadians in need of a lifeline like this. Will you deny our families this much needed assistance until we can find another job and get back on our feet ? This is not about ideology but survival for some . Did this thought ever occur in that empty vessel you call your heads ?
This budget shows that PM Harper has no clue as to why Canada is in a recession, and no clue as to what to do about it. This recession was not caused by some unforseen, tragic accident. It's a result of the decline of our industrial infrastructure, which has been throttled by high taxes, regulations and powerful unions. Like the United States, we are bleeding jobs to countries like China, Mexico, Brazil and India.
It used to be the case that these jobs were in so-called "sweatshop" industries, but that is not so much the case any longer. A lot of the industries moving offshore are highly capitalized, high-tech concerns.
The budget failed miserably to address any of these problems. I have an important question for PM Harper: just how is Canada's lack of industrial competitiveness going to be enhanced by building hockey rinks and "social" housing?
The Harper so called conservatives say that the economic problems are global.
That is true, however, why are the global free-market conservatives abandoning the free markets system and allowing government to take its place?
Is this an acknowledgement that we need governments and occasional large market intervention by governments?
Is the idea of freemarkets within economic neoconservative thinking dead?
Fiscal conservatism has been dead in Canada for as long as I can remember. If it had been alive at any time in the last, say, 40 years or so, we wouldn't have such a bloated government in Ottawa today.
Here's what we need to set the train back on its tracks:
- A leaner and more efficient government, one that has learned to do more with less.
- A federal flat tax; e.g., 15% up to $80,000 and 25% above $80,000, with a personal exemption between $20,000 and $25,000
And let's be clear about this: Obama in the States is more of a fiscal conservative than Harper has ever been. Americans will get real tax cuts (up to $1,000, instead of the lousy a-latté-a-month-extra-sort-of tax cut we were given yesterday), and about 47% of Americans will end up paying no tax at all.
